The Day I Became An SEO Copywriter
Freshly out of school, we all have our fair share of emotions racing through our minds. Some of us can’t wait to start this new journey into adulthood and some others prefer to take a year off before jumping into a full-time job. In my own case, I was more than ready to dive right in! After getting my bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Tourism Business, I was fully prepared to find a job in this field, where I would be able to put all my years of knowledge into practice. Then luckily, I got hired for an interesting job in Tourism, but things didn’t turn out as expected.
After a while, I couldn’t help but notice that something felt off but couldn’t really put my finger on it. That’s when I started questioning myself and realised that, day by day, I was feeling more and more disconnected from what I was doing. Now, there was nothing wrong with my choice of studies, or the job, or the fact that I was under stress because, whether we like it or not, stress is something we all have to deal with at some point. Daily tasks became somewhat overwhelming, all days felt the same, I wasn’t feeling that I was doing enough no matter how hard I worked. I started feeling stuck in this mentally unhealthy loop and I knew that if I didn’t do something, anything, I’ll end up losing myself. After thinking it through, I finally left the job and a few months later, that’s when I came across a Digital Marketing Agency looking to recruit a Digital Copywriter.
I’ve always had a passion for writing and story-telling and even though I had no experience whatsoever in Digital Marketing, my young, motivated and freshly graduated self, found the courage to pick up the phone and try my luck for an internship.
From the get-go, we all knew that I didn’t meet most of the requirements for the position they were hiring for, but they took me in for an internship and that’s where my career took a turn that I never expected. Training after training, project after project, I felt more confident and motivated than ever.
A coveted first experience as a beginner where you get to work with a team that believes in you and gives you a shot at new professional prospects – Isn’t it what most graduates seek? I was taking this opportunity with a different mindset. It was my personal challenge and as difficult as it may have been sometimes, I acquired more skills and knowledge that could help me later on. Slowly but surely, before I saw it coming, I took a strong liking to it. From SEO basics, keyword research, benchmarks, competitor analysis, content strategies and so much more, I went through it all with the help of my amazing team who recognised my strengths and took the time to train me so that I could become the professional I envisioned to be. I am now a certified SEO Copywriter aka word-wizard at SEA Digital, the agency that believed in me.
To all the fresh graduates or anyone reading this, here are some thoughtful tips for you:
Don’t wait. Set your own challenges. Embrace your strengths and your weaknesses as they’ll both help you to grow professionally and personally. Don’t be ashamed or scared of a career change. If you get a golden opportunity, take it and learn everything you can from it, good or bad. Show willingness, open-mindedness and curiosity, they’ll push you further than you imagined. Don’t look for the dream job but the one where you belong. Be authentic, be bold, be different, but most importantly, be kind to yourself.
